Hosted lunch for the Crown Princess of Thail...

Hosted lunch for the Crown Princess of Thailand, HRH Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, an old and good friend of Singapore. We had chicken rice (her favourite Singaporean dish), wonton soup, cereal prawns and cheng tng.

We talked about many things: the Crown Princess’ education projects in Southern Thailand, info technology (the Crown Princess uses Whatsapp but not Facebook), and the region. Her great grandfather King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) had been close to Mr Tan Kim Ching (the eldest son of Tan Tock Seng), and appointed him Thailand’s Consul-General to Singapore. Mr Tan helped the Royal Family to purchase “Hurricane House” in Orchard Road where the Thai Embassy still stands. King Chulalongkorn also donated $1,000 (in gold baht coins), a princely sum in the 19th century, to build the Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Today the hospital runs a training programme for senior Thai nurses selected by the Crown Princess’ office. Our friendship with Thailand goes back a long way. – LHL

On this page I talk about the things I’m doing and thinking about, but I would also like to hear from you, about what we can do together for Singapore.
